Sierra Forest with 288 E-cores to Boost 5G Performance

Intel-MWC-2024A sneak peek at Intel’s next Intel Xeon processors, code-named Sierra Forest and featuring up to 288 Efficient-cores (E-cores), has been released. When the Intel Xeon next-generation processors, code-named Sierra Forest, are released later this year, they will have up to 288 cores and will assist operators in recognizing “a 2.7x gain in performance per rack,” which is a high performance per rack for applications using 5G cores.

Without having to make any adjustments to application software, network operators would be able to boost performance per rack, virtual CPUs (vCPUs), and performance per watt thanks to the new processors. To implement the new CPUs and Intel Infrastructure Power Manager software, Intel is working closely with 5G core software providers and operators.

According to Intel, network operators’ top concerns while constructing their wireless 5G core network are energy conservation and minimizing the infrastructure footprint. Network operators would have processors optimized for TCO and energy savings thanks to the vendor’s E-cores.

Intel Infrastructure Power Manager

Launched last year at MWC 2023, the Intel Infrastructure Power Manager software for 5G core is now commercially available. Utilizing the Intel Xeon processors’ integrated telemetry would enable operators to lower CPU power consumption without sacrificing important performance indicators like throughput, latency, and packet loss. Installing the software is possible on both current and future Xeon-based network equipment.

By introducing new Efficient-cores to our roadmap and with the commercial adoption of our Intel Infrastructure Power Manager software, service providers can slash TCO while achieving unmatched performance and power savings across their networks.”

Potential users of the Xenon processors may visit the Intel Booth at MWC (Hall 3, Booth 3E31) to see demonstrations of these Intel Xeon next-gen processors code-named Sierra Forest, while they can also learn more about the Intel Infrastructure Power Manager for 5G core.
