SK Telecom, Iceotope, SK Enmove Collaborate for Energy-Efficient AI Cooling

SKT - IceotopeThe creation of a liquid cooling method or solution that maximizes the energy-efficiency of AI data centers is the focus of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by Koran telecom operator SK Telecom, precision liquid cooling provider Iceotope Technologies, and SK Enmove, one of Korea’s top base oil and lubricant providers developing thermal fluids for data centers.

Reducing the power consumption of cooling and air conditioning systems is essential to creating an energy-efficient AI data center, since these systems account for the majority of energy consumption in data centers.

By carefully distributing dielectric fluid to the server’s hotter parts, Iceotope’s precision liquid cooling (PLC) technology would effectively lower energy use.

As per the MOU, SKT, Iceotope, and SK Enmove will work together to implement precision liquid cooling (PLC) at SKT’s AI Data Center Testbed by using SK Enmove’s thermal fluid. The deployment is intended to highlight the benefits of PLCs for electricity and cooling efficiency. Furthermore, with Iceotope’s technical assistance, SKT will create an integrated Coolant Distribution Unit (CDU) to accommodate a variety of liquid cooling systems.

“By combining core technologies and capabilities of SKT, Iceotope and SK Enmove, we expect to develop innovative energy efficiency solutions that can not only help us strengthen our competitiveness in AI data centers, but also put us on the right path towards sustainability,” said Lee Jong-min, Vice President and Head of Future R&D at SK Telecom.

AI Autonomous Cooling System

SKT intends to create an autonomous cooling system powered by AI in the future. To improve the AI data center’s operating efficiency, the AI Autonomous Cooling System will autonomously regulate the supply temperature and thermal fluid flow rate in the CDUs by analyzing the temperature and power load inside the facility.

“We are thrilled to be collaborating with SKT and SK Enmove on AI data center innovation and look forward to helping them and their customers to realize energy-efficiency in their facilities with our Precision Liquid Cooling solutions,” said David Craig, CEO of Iceotope Technologies.

“Importance of establishing sustainable environment is increasing these days. Through this cooperation, we aim to contribute to the vitalization of the immersion cooling market and solidify our position as an Energy Saving Company,” said Seo Sang-hyuk, Vice President and Head of e-Fluids B2B Business Office at SK Enmove.
