A Bethesda, Maryland-based business founded in 2019 has secured $8.85 million in funding to expand the construction of its modular data centers, which, in some circumstances, may be set up in a single night. The startup is backed by Zacua Ventures, an early-stage VC founded in 2022 by the two Flexnode co-founders and focused on making global investments in the built world.

Flexnode now has $12.35 million in total capital injection. Blending customized, immersive design, DFMA-centric building processes, enhanced operation of high-performance data center nodes, and effective liquid-cooling technologies, Flexnode’s approach is quite unique. The core of Flexnode’s strategy is its dedication to fusing feasible technical solutions with innovative architectural ideas, redefining how data centers may (and should) be planned, constructed, acquired, and run. This would allow them to provide a new generation of innovative micro data management solutions that enable AI and other complex, demanding next-generation applications in any setting.

Flexnode would guarantee versatility, simplicity of deployment, and quick completion timeframes by providing completely demountable, portable data center components that fit into areas as small as a freight elevator. Furthermore, by tackling key sustainability issues in the data infrastructure industry and drastically lowering energy consumption, its incorporation of liquid cooling would help improve performance.

“A decade ago, the prevailing belief was that the cloud would dominate the future of data storage. However, the last few years have demonstrated that local data infrastructures are often preferable for reasons relating to speed, sustainability and regulation,” said Flexnode Co-Founder and CEO, Andrew Lindsey. “Our product offers bespoke solutions tailored to the specific requirements of each client. This capability involves a deep understanding of varied client needs, from the architectural design to the operational specifics, and comes with our deep dedication to ushering in a new kind of data center procurement and consumption experience that challenges outmoded methods and results. We’re grateful for the support of Zacua Ventures, and we look forward to using this latest capital injection to further refine and scale our product offerings.”

About Zacua Ventures

Flexnode’s vision and promise in the quickly evolving data infrastructure market are illustrated by the recent investment from Zacua Ventures and contributions from internationally renowned partners including Yes VC, Arup, SHoP Architects, and JE Dunn. But this isn’t the first time the business has received recognition. Flexnode’s innovative solutions have caught the interest of prominent institutions like the Department of Energy’s Advanced Research Project Agency (ARPA-E), which gave the company a $3.5 million innovation grant for continued R&D.

Founded by Andrew Lindsey and Robert Mazer, Flexnode’s co-founders, the Zacua Ventures VC business has regional presence in San Francisco, Madrid, Mexico, and Singapore. With its operations in North America, Europe, and Asia, Zacua Ventures says it has global access to cutting-edge technology, allowing it to make investments in the most innovative solutions in robotics, digitalization, sustainability, and other fields.

By using the extensive network of its limited partners and the in-house team’s deep comprehension of the construction and investment domains, Zacua Ventures claims to be in a unique position to serve as an intermediary between startups and corporate investors, therefore opening up new avenues for cooperation and expansion.

Zacua Ventures says it is one of the most active construction venture capitalists in the world, having invested in the early stages of over a dozen firms in the construction technology ecosystem since the fund’s founding.
