DataR Begins Construction on Energy-Efficient Hamburg Data Center

German data center colocation company dataR has held a ceremony to officially herald the construction start of their new data center in the Hamburg area, in Rellingen. The new colocation data center involves an innovative project with a “groundbreaking” architecture that would set new standards for efficiency, innovation and environmental sustainability.

The ceremony marked the start of construction on the ambitious project to develop one of Germany’s most efficient colocation data centers, with a PUE value ranging from 1.08 to 1.225, using state-of-the-art water cooling technology. This initiative would exemplify dataR’s commitment to redefining environmental responsibility in the data center industry and continue the tradition of x-ion GmbH, which was dedicated to developing innovative, forward-thinking technical solutions. The construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Approximately 600 racks for IT infrastructure will be available in the 2,500 square meter dataR colocation data center. Robust security mechanisms, such as biometric identification and 24-hour monitoring, are in place to guarantee the safety and integrity of the hosted equipment.

Founded in 2009, x-ion GmbH is a cloud and network infrastructure provider from the Hamburg region. Their primary areas of expertise are worldwide network connections and individual cloud environment development, consulting, and operation. x-ion saw the need for future-proof data centers to support its cloud services, which must be both efficient and sustainable – to fulfill the increasing demand for cloud infrastructure and other digital services.

Reuse of Waste Heat

dataR is a company led by experienced businessmen Andreas Janker and Martin Bosner, who also manage cloud company x-ion GmbH. They want to revolutionize the way colocation data centers in Germany are run. Based on their experience with x-ion, dataR aims to provide performance, efficiency, and sustainability that would set the standard for the German data center colocation sector while far exceeding current standards.

The colocation data center in Rellingen is using state-of-the-art technology and placing a strong emphasis on ecologically responsible construction and operating techniques. dataR would demonstrate that it is possible to minimize environmental impact while maximizing the potential of modern data processing. The business’s dedication to sustainability is shown by the effective use of waste heat for a nearby heat supply project and the use of only 100% green power. A few examples of dataR’s innovative use of technology include adiabatic cooling systems fueled by on-site solar panels and chillers that employ ammonia-based refrigerants to reduce emissions.
