Amazon Web Services to invest €7.8 billion for AWS European Sovereign Cloud

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has unveiled plans to invest €7.8 billion in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud in Germany by 2040. This significant investment highlights AWS’s dedication to addressing Europe’s digital sovereignty needs. As part of this initiative, AWS will launch its first AWS Region in Brandenburg, Germany, by the end of 2025. This new region will be accessible to all customers, providing them with more options for cloud services.

The investment is anticipated to boost the local cloud community, enhancing productivity, facilitating business digital transformation, expanding the AWS Partner Network (APN), and upskilling the workforce in cloud and digital technologies. Additionally, AWS aims to foster renewable energy projects and positively impact the communities where it operates.

The total investment is projected to contribute €17.2 billion to Germany’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) through 2040, supporting an average of 2,800 full-time jobs annually in local German businesses. These roles encompass construction, facility maintenance, engineering, telecommunications, and other areas within the AWS data center supply chain.

Moreover, AWS will create new highly-skilled permanent positions to build and operate the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, including software engineers, systems developers, and solutions architects. This commitment ensures that all operations of the AWS European Sovereign Cloud will be managed exclusively by EU-based personnel, covering data center access, technical support, and customer service.

Independent cloud solution meeting EU regulations

The AWS European Sovereign Cloud will be an independent cloud solution for Europe, offering public sector organizations and customers in highly regulated industries additional options to meet their evolving sovereignty requirements. Utilizing AWS’s powerful infrastructure, it will feature the same architecture, expansive service portfolio, and APIs familiar to current users, but will remain separate from existing AWS Regions. This ensures that customers benefit from AWS’s industry-leading security, availability, performance, and resilience.

The new cloud will meet stringent EU operational autonomy and data residency requirements, with infrastructure wholly located within the EU and operated independently from existing Regions. It will enable customers to retain all their data and metadata within the EU, providing a robust solution for compliance with regional regulations.

Over the past 25 years, Amazon has significantly contributed to economic development in communities and countries across Europe through its investments in infrastructure, jobs, and skills. Since 2010, Amazon has invested over €150 billion in the European Union and currently employs more than 150,000 people in permanent roles within the European Single Market. The launch of the AWS European Sovereign Cloud further reinforces Amazon’s enduring commitment to Europe and its continuous investment in the region’s digital future.
