Raxio Data Centres, an operator of carrier-neutral colocation facilities in Africa, has officially launched Raxio Mozambique (Raxio MZ1), the country’s first Tier III Uptime Certified data center. This development marks a significant milestone for Mozambique’s digital economy and aligns with the Government’s digital transformation agenda. Raxio MZ1 is part of Raxio’s broader strategy to establish a robust digital infrastructure across the African continent.
Robert Mullins, CEO of Raxio Group, expressed pride in opening Mozambique’s first Tier III, hyper-scale ready data center. He emphasized the center’s role in supporting the country’s digital economy and accelerating the adoption of digital tools and services across various industries.
The flagship colocation facility, Raxio MZ1, is a hub of connectivity and digital exchange, with commitments from eight of Mozambique’s top telecom operators and connectivity providers. Mr. Mullins highlighted that delivering this facility demonstrates Raxio’s capabilities and commitment to providing world-class infrastructure for businesses in Mozambique.
Located in Beluluane Industrial Park (MozParks) on the outskirts of Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, the Raxio MZ1 colocation facility meets both primary and disaster recovery needs of its clients. The facility would benefit from the Park’s robust power and connectivity infrastructure, ensuring a stable and highly connected operating environment. Strategically positioned near three subsea cable landings, including the high-capacity 2Africa cable, Raxio MZ1 would offer excellent international connectivity and serve as an ideal redundant route for the broader Southern African market.
The Wider Southern African Region
Emidio Amadebai, Raxio’s General Manager in Mozambique, commented on the significance of the launch, stating that Mozambique is now set to benefit from its own world-class data center facility. Raxio’s dedicated operational experience would support the country’s continued digital development. He noted that Mozambique’s location makes Raxio MZ1 ideally suited to meet the needs of both local customers and those in the wider Southern African region.
Raxio MZ1 is equipped with “industry-leading” cooling technology, security standards, AC/DC power compatibility, and redundancy to ensure an ‘always-on’ uptime environment. Colocation customers will be able to cross-connect with local and international carriers and other clients in specially designed meet-me rooms (MMRs). The shared infrastructure model offered by Raxio would allow colocation customers to reduce operational and capital costs while enhancing application performance and flexibility. This, combined with investments in terrestrial infrastructure, will facilitate local internet traffic, attract regional and international service providers, and improve the internet experience for digital users in Mozambique and the region.
Focus on Data Center Sustainability
Sustainability is a key focus for Raxio. Over 80 percent of Mozambique’s electricity is generated from renewable sources, one of the highest rates in Africa. Raxio MZ1 will leverage this renewable energy, using a combination of hydro-generated grid power and local solar supply. The facility’s energy-efficient design and environmentally conscious processes reflect Raxio’s commitment to sustainability. Advanced technologies ensure maximum operational effectiveness and environmental efficiency, allowing the facility to achieve unparalleled Power Usage Efficiency (PUE) ratios in Africa.
Raxio’s expansion continues with strong momentum behind its pan-African digital backbone. The company opened its Uganda data center in late 2021, followed by Raxio Ethiopia earlier this year. In 2024, the Mozambique launch will be followed by new facilities in Côte d’Ivoire and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the third quarter, and Angola by the end of the year, bringing the total number of live facilities to six.
Robert Mullins highlighted the significance of 2024 for Raxio, describing it as the culmination of a multi-year effort. He credited Raxio‘s success to a unique combination of secure financing, in-house technical and project delivery expertise, and the ability to coordinate contractors and building teams. Mullins affirmed Raxio’s commitment to building a network of interconnected data centers with world-class infrastructure across underserved markets in Africa. He expressed confidence in Africa’s role in the deployment of global AI capabilities and excitement about being part of this future.
