The Taipei Internet Exchange (TPIX) and AMS-IX Hong Kong are set to significantly enhance their connectivity networks through a new strategic partnership. This strategic partnership would allow TPIX members to expand their network resources and facilitate content sharing and localization, not only within Hong Kong but also across HGC’s extensive global network.
This collaboration is marked by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Chief Telecom (CHIEF), the operator of Taiwan’s largest Internet Exchange (TPIX), the globally renowned Internet Exchange AMS-IX, and HGC Global Communications (HGC), an ICT service provider and network operator with extensive global coverage.
The MOU aims to create a comprehensive business solution for customers, facilitating “seamless” network traffic exchange between TPIX and AMS-IX Hong Kong. This integration would enable users to expand their Internet network resources by leveraging an extensive global connectivity network, effectively providing a one-stop-shop solution.
Reaching Other AMS-IX Internet Exchanges in Asia
AMS-IX, based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, stands as one of the world’s largest Internet Exchanges with nearly a thousand members. HGC, a prominent telecom operator in Asia, partners with AMS-IX to enhance connectivity in the region.
HGC’s extensive global network includes diversified routes and robust digital infrastructure, empowering TPIX members to reach other AMS-IX Internet Exchanges in Asia such as Singapore, Bangkok, and Manila, and globally, including Amsterdam, the Bay Area, and Chicago. The remote network peering solution offered through this collaboration is expected to significantly enhance end-user experiences by providing “seamless and reliable” connectivity.
AMS-IX Hong Kong members would also benefit from this partnership by gaining access to an additional 170 network connections and tapping into the local user base in Taiwan via TPIX. This expanded connectivity is expected to drive more traffic exchange for both AMS-IX Hong Kong and TPIX members. The reciprocal benefits of this partnership are poised to help connected parties penetrate each other’s markets, thereby reaching a broader audience and contributing to the growth of the cross-border peering ecosystem.
Building an Expansive Peering Ecosystem
Joseph Wu, Chairman of Chief Telecom, highlighted the value of this global community of internet exchanges, stating, “Joining the global community of internet exchanges is a valuable experience and opportunity for CHIEF. We can leverage each other’s local customers and numerous peering members to create a synergistic effect greater than the sum of its parts. We aspire to become the digital convergence of East Asia and AI cloud application center.” Mr. Wu also emphasized CHIEF’s role as a significant hub for major private and consortium submarine cable systems in the Asia-Pacific region, and the ambition to elevate TPIX’s global ranking and digital influence.
Daniel Wang, Assistant Vice President for Taiwan International Business at HGC, expressed honor in partnering with CHIEF and AMS-IX. He noted, “This strategic cooperation aligns with our strategy to build a robust and expansive peering ecosystem. This ecosystem will enable more peering opportunities for OTT, content providers, gaming, and cloud service providers across the regions. By leveraging our global reach and digital infrastructure, we can improve Internet performance through low latency and enhance end-user experience.”
Onno Bos, International Partnership Director of AMS-IX, remarked on Asia’s rapid growth in Internet traffic. “By expanding our connectivity network in the region, either via partnerships and opening additional exchanges, we strive to support the growth of digital transformation. In doing so, the region will benefit from more efficient, reliable, and secure data exchange between different networks.”
