Equinix is set to expand its presence in India with a new data center in Chennai. The company recently unveiled plans for a new International Business Exchange (IBX) facility, named CN1, aimed at supporting enterprises and hyperscalers, including AI deployments. With an initial investment of $65 million, CN1 will span nearly 6 acres and is expected to open in Q4 2024.
CN1 will be located in the SIPCOT (State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu Ltd) area in Siruseri, approximately 28 kilometers from Chennai’s Central Business District. This strategic location is near anticipated submarine cable landing sites, facilitating the extension of Platform Equinix® to a key metropolitan area in India. Upon completion, the four-story CN1 facility will offer a total capacity of 4,950 cabinets, with the first phase providing 850 cabinets.
The new facility will connect with Equinix’s three existing high-performance data centers in Mumbai, providing a robust digital infrastructure to drive innovation and digital transformation in India.
CN1 is designed to be a dynamic hub for startups, enterprises, network, and cloud service providers, fostering an environment conducive to groundbreaking initiatives and transformative endeavors. Chennai’s strategic location and strong tech ecosystem, bolstered by proactive government initiatives and a thriving business environment, make it an attractive destination for digital infrastructure investment. This expansion not only enhances Chennai’s status on the global stage but also offers international customers opportunities to leverage the city’s tech capabilities.
Equinix has recently launched a new IBX data center in Mumbai, named MB4, expanding its local footprint with an additional 350 cabinets. Another data center, MB3, is set to open in Q4 2024, providing an initial capacity of over 1,375 cabinets and more than 5,500 cabinets when fully built out.
In Mumbai, Equinix hosts over 300 companies, including around 200 network service providers and five internet exchanges, making it the densest cloud ecosystem in India. It provides on-ramps to eight cloud service providers, including Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud.
Equinix is committed to sustainability, with plans for its Chennai and Mumbai facilities, CN1 and MB3, to be fully powered by renewable energy. The company aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2030, focusing on incorporating clean and renewable energy across its global operations.
Equinix operates 260 data centers across 71 metros in 33 countries, serving over 10,000 of the world’s leading businesses. In the Asia-Pacific region, it has 56 data centers in key metros, including Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, and Singapore.
