Equinix has unveiled plans for its latest colocation data center in Singapore, marking a pivotal investment of over $260 million to bolster the region’s digital infrastructure and AI innovation. Named SG6, this facility will be Equinix‘s sixth International Business Exchange (IBX) data center in Singapore, designed to support the country’s Digital Growth Goals and the Green Plan 2030.
The initiative reflects Singapore’s position as a leading technology hub in Asia, advancing its stature in artificial intelligence and sustainable development.
The new colocation facility, Equinix SG6, is set to address the increasing demand for compute-intensive workloads such as AI applications, offering enhanced liquid cooling technology to efficiently manage high-density gear like GPUs. The facility’s environmentally conscious design aligns with Singapore’s Green Plan 2030, a national strategy to achieve sustainable growth, reduce carbon emissions, and improve environmental resilience by the decade’s end.
Scheduled for completion in Q1 2027, the SG6 colocation facility will feature a nine-story structure with a 20MW capacity. It joins Equinix‘s expansive network of 268 interconnected data centers spanning 73 metro areas and 34 countries. The facility’s sustainable features include advanced liquid cooling, rainwater harvesting, lower-carbon construction materials, and energy-efficient water-cooled chillers. Additionally, a renewable power purchase agreement (PPA) with Sembcorp Industries will promote renewable energy integration into Singapore’s grid.
Equinix Managing Director for Singapore, Yee May Leong, emphasized the strategic significance of the facility. “Singapore is the region’s hub for innovation, making it a global magnet for multinational companies and pioneering businesses, and a key market for Equinix. Our AI-ready data center will empower organizations to leverage next-generation workloads sustainably and responsibly,” said Leong.
Liquid Cooling and Renewable Energy Sourcing
The announcement comes as Singapore’s digital economy has demonstrated robust growth, expanding from S$58 billion in 2017 to S$106 billion in 2022, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. The country’s leadership in emerging technologies, such as quantum computing and AI governance frameworks, underscores the growing demand for innovative and scalable digital infrastructure. SG6 aims to meet these needs by enabling seamless integration with Equinix’s global services, thereby supporting industries across the region.
Th SG6 colocation facility is part of Equinix’s broader regional strategy, following its entry into the Philippine and Thai markets earlier in 2024. The expansion highlights Equinix’s commitment to providing scalable and sustainable solutions in rapidly evolving digital economies.
Equinix has maintained 100% renewable energy coverage for its Singapore data centers since 2020. The new SG6 colocation facility is expected to deepen these sustainability efforts, serving as a model for integrating green technologies into data center operations. With features like liquid cooling and renewable energy sourcing, SG6 would reflect a forward-thinking approach to meeting both environmental and technological demands.
By combining cutting-edge infrastructure with sustainability, SG6 would play a crucial role in enabling businesses to drive AI innovation and achieve their digital transformation goals while adhering to sustainability commitments.
